Project Small garbage truck

To make waste collection more efficient in narrow alleyways and canal-side neighborhoods, Bangkok introduced small garbage trucks with hauling equipment solving access issues and reducing waste buildup and bad smells.

What's wrong?

Big trucks can’t enter narrow alleys

Uncollected trash smells bad and spreads bacteria

Workers drag trash from the alleys

Unsightly surroundings

Our goal

  • Reduce waste buildup and bad odors in neighborhoods, which attract germs and disease-carrying pests
  • Improve the visual appearance of communities
  • Improve the efficiency of waste hauling and collection in Bangkok
  • Helping staff work easier and stay healthier

Implementation

1

Rent electric tricycles for solid waste collection, with a minimum load capacity of 500 kg

2

Used in 50 district offices, with a total of 50 vehicles

3

These vehicles are used by staff to collect and haul waste from narrow alleyways and congested communities to designated pickup points accessible by garbage trucks

Small but mighty

  • Helps workers collect waste more quickly and easily
  • Eco-friendly, because it runs on electric power
  • Supported by ETRAN (Thailand) Co., Ltd., who manufactured the vehicles and sponsored the production costs
  • King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok collaborated in the design

Impressive results

From the pilot trial in the Wat Liab Rat Bamrung community, which served as a model for using small electric garbage vehicles to transport waste out of narrow alleyways where large trucks cannot access, it was found that

Quicker Trash Collection

Previously, staff had to manually pull waste out of the community over a round-trip distance of 2 kilometers

Reduced Waste Collection Volume

No more buildup of uncollected waste

Clean and livable community

Healthier residents, cleaner air

Better health for workers

Increased efficiency and reduced risks from waste hauling
