Bangkok aims to become a “Solar Cell City” ☀️ with a plan to develop the installation of 60 megawatts (MW) of solar cells by 2025 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote clean energy. This plan consists of 3 main axes as follows:

1. Facilitate people in installing solar cells.
✅ Installed on the roof of a building with a total weight of "more than" 20 kilograms/square meter in any area is not considered a building modification. No need to request permission for installation, but must have a civil engineer certify the stability and strength.
✅ Installed on the roof of a building with a total weight in any area of "not more than" 20 kilograms/square meter. No need for a civil engineer to certify.

2. Promote the installation of solar cells in Bangkok's agencies.
✅ 8 wastewater treatment plants, 1.7 MW installed capacity, expected production of 2,164 MWh, reducing greenhouse gases by 967 tCO2e/year, saving 20% electricity costs
✅ 9 hospitals under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration are installing 2.7 MW with an expected production of 3,781 MWh, reducing greenhouse gases by 2,152.50 tCO2e/year.
✅ Target to install an additional 10 MW in 2025

3. Survey the solar cell database in Bangkok area.
Currently, there are 348 solar cell installations in Bangkok (from 34 districts) with a production capacity of 26.5 MW, divided into 296 with a production capacity of less than 20 kilowatts and 52 with a production capacity of more than 20 kilowatts.

Benefits received
- Service charge per unit decreased by 20% from the base electricity charge.
- Estimated savings over 25 years are 36,955,516 baht.
- Reduce air pollution
Three main greenhouse gas reduction plans
- Promote energy efficiency: such as switching to LED bulbs or limiting building cooling.
- Promote renewable energy: solar cells, wind power, biomass power
- Promote alternative travel: Encourage the use of public transport, cycling and walking.
Bangkok is committed to developing into a “Solar Cell City” with a comprehensive development plan covering the public, business, and government sectors. This plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote clean energy, and create a sustainable environment for Bangkokians.
